How does John Chow make money blogging?

Welcome back! Have you joined my mailing list yet?

I've been watching this video off and on. It's a presentation that answers the question 'what does John Chow do to make money with his blog?'. This is very good information! There's a lot of marketers on the net that would charge for this kind of information, but here it is, free to the web.

You can either see it at JC's blog, which can be found here, or watch the video below.

This Stuff In Lieu of Actual Content

I've been doing a little bit of work on this site as time has been permitting me. Alas, I'm not really sure how much more I can do.

Oh wait, there's a ton of things that I can do to make this blog better! But until those good ideas come around, here's a couple of the things that I have been doing around here.

First, I've added a new plugin to the site in order to help with organic traffic, namely Headspace2. What it does is give you the ability to fill out the meta title and description of each blog post. Just think, this is a chance to get in those all-important keywords that search engines just love.

Second, I've signed up and installed Kontera, which is a content-based CPC advertising network. Basically it chooses keywords in your blog posts and automatically makes them links (denoted by the double underlines). So far, it seems to be working, although I really would love to see some real traffic show up to see just how well using Kontera works.

I've also added a neat little feature (which you can see at the top of this post if you are on the post's page rather than the index.php) which allows you to retweet my posts with a single click. Just a little bit of php code and voila, instant Twitter retweet gratification! OK, maybe not so much, but it's a very neat (and easy to use) tool for giving your readers a chance to pass your post along to their followers. Speaking of Twitter followers, my earlier blog post about how I gained 100 Twitter followers in two hours did sort of jump the gun...I'm now over 1600, and the number is steadily increasing. In fact, my followers are also growing thanks to my use of the #tcot (top conservatives on Twitter) hashtag for my other blog, Verbal Thermite. Another area where having tons of Twitter followers is showing a great benefit is in the use of Be-A-Magpie, which is a service that helps you monetize your Twitter account. I'm now making over three Euros with each Magpie tweet. I wonder what John Chow could make with his account...hmm...

Finally, and also the most important update to this site for now is the fact that I've done some work with my mailing list. Now you can get a free PLR (private label rights) article pack when you join our list! If you are wondering how this can benefit you, you should check out my Squidoo lens on how to make money with PLR and MRR products. Read that, and then join the mailing list, and together we can take over the internet...er...I mean, make money online.

Shoemoney’s Secret: How to Make Huge Profits From Your Blog

I was making the rounds on the net and I saw this post on Shoemoney's blog called "Progress and Completion" where he talks about making progress on things and how completion of a goal sometimes puts a stop to progress. Aside from being a very good post, he mentioned something that made me think a bit (aside from the whole thing about making progress, etc.).

He mentioned the typical email that he receives on a daily basis, essentially someone giving a sob story about why they need to know his secret to making money out of nothing (or almost nothing) overnight. But the big thing that got me thinking was the typical reaction to Shoe's well thought out response. You know, going ballistic because Shoemoney didn't divulge all of his secret tricks; forget the fact that he said that wasn't his focus...

But let's get down to brass tacks. If you are reading this, then you really just want to know what makes Jeremy Schoemaker so much freaking money. I know the answer. Are you ready?

Mr. Schoemaker's secret is learning. Shall I explain this a bit more?

Whether you are talking about Shoemoney, John Chow, or any other super affiliate, there is a common thread in the way they make their money. It's all about learning how to make different programs work best in combination.

And for those idiots who email these guys demanding that they give out their 'secret recipe', think about this: THEY ARE ALREADY GIVING IT OUT. Maybe they aren't just handing over a piece of paper or an ebook with their entire business strategy on it, but the bits of information and wisdom that they include in their blogs are, in fact, parts of their strategy. Ideas that work, ideas that suck, it's all there. All you have to do is pay attention.

And I'm pretty sure that these guys didn't just instantly find something that made their bank accounts spazz out. There's not a single success story that didn't include failure somewhere in the mix.

OK, maybe that's not a big secret. But from the response that Jeremy spoke of, you would think that it was.

Anyway, every affiliate blogger worth reading will drop some useful bits of information on their blog. All you have to do is read it. Grab their RSS feeds...and get my RSS feed while you are at it. Join their mailing lists. Jeremy sends some awesome information through it that you won't just find lying around the blog...it's definitely worth doing.

Anyway, this is just a thought. Keep reading and learning, and one day you may be making the big bucks as well.

Reading Stuff #1

I thought I should share some of the interesting things that I have found on the internet this past week or two. Here you go.

Cows and Politics Explained - John Cow makes it really, really simple to understand how things go down.

John Chow posts, amid his ramblings, an interesting video about how people in different countries count their cash.

Not John Chow ponders the infinite and calculates the answer to 'What is an Entrecard credit worth, anyway?'

Caroline Middlebrook is hiding Easter eggs on her site. One is on her about page.

The Social Millionaire: Can It Be Done?

Pat Hankinson, the man behind the site thesocialmillionaire.com, has an idea...a big idea. An idea so big, it makes some people question it.

So what is this idea?

Pat sells keywords on his site. These keywords are then linked to the buyer's website. The catch? His site is really only promoted (as far as I can gather) on social networking sites.

The concept sounds pretty good, considering the popularity of social networks, such as MySpace, Entrecard, and Twitter. But the question still remains as to whether this is a good idea or not. Naturally, a project of this type is going to have both supporters and those who question. For example, John Chow.

Promoting The Social Millionaire on the various social networks seems like a solid idea, but I don’t think that it’ll be enough for Pat to rake in seven figures. I encourage him to prove me wrong though! -- JohnChow.com 3/14

John also pointed out that with keywords selling for as little as $1.00 each, it might be slow-going at best.

On the other hand, word-of-mouth has its advantages. In just one day (after the post on Mr. Chow's blog), Pat's sales have gone from $213.61 to $1,005.08. That's a pretty staggering amount of change for just one day.

My prediction, while not nearly as 'valid' as John Chow's, is that Mr. Hankinson will make a nice fat paycheck when it is all said and done. Social networking or not, word of mouth might just push this idea right to the finish line.

Why didn't I think of that?
