Welcome to 2010, everybody! It's time to look ahead and see what kind of goals we can wreck...er...set for this new year. But before we do that, let's take a look at our goals from the past year and see how we did.

So my biggest goal was to see if I could make $1000 on the internet this past year. If you recall, back in 2008 my goal was only $500, which I reached. Doubling that amount really was easy to do, especially thanks to a stellar CPC campaign that I found over at Logical Media. Unfortunately, that campaign is now a thing of the past, but with that single campaign I ended up pulling in over HALF of my goal. Not bad for $0.10 per click, right?

2009 was definitely the year of Twitter income for me. Not only did I find a beautiful CPC campaign to (ab)use on Twitter, but I found many other avenues that worked great for monetizing my Twitter account. If you want to know a bit more on how I made money on Twitter, just click here.

Another major goal was to start building my Twitter following. If I remember correctly, my goal was to have 1,000 followers. What can I say? That was easy.

So what about 2010?

I'm glad you asked. Here's a short list of goals for 2010:

1. Instead of increasing my monetary goal twofold like I did last year, I think keeping it at the same level will be a good idea. So my goal for 2010 for web-based income will stay at $1000.

2. Find creative ways to do some marketing. I would actually like to have a decent side income from my web activities. I mean, I realize that this blog is really just a hobby, but if it can help me pay my bills, why not? Especially since my job is at risk and I've been dealing with some very serious personal issues. The more money I can make the better. My goal is to actually find new techniques that work.

Really, those are my two goals for 2010. I have proven to myself that it is doable. Now I just have to do it.

Outside of this blog, my goals are to be a better role model to my children and friends. This year has been personally devastating for me. I've pretty much lost everything that I held dear; namely my family. So now that I'm dealing with a painful divorce, it's been difficult to keep myself motivated as I should be. The last six months have been hell on earth for me, and I plan to do better for my children as well as for myself. The last thing they need is a dad who they perceive as someone who doesn't care about them. And right now, the best (if not only) way I can do that is to work hard, pray hard, and just try to do the best I can.

I've also submitted my application to go back to college, so we'll see how that works out. I've got about 14 days left to sign up for classes, and my car is dead where it stands. I'm working on a plan to get another car right now, so that should be fun if I can get it going.

Well, that about wraps it up for this year. I hope you all have the best year ever in 2010!

It’s important to know the rules.

Yesterday was my last day driving a tow truck. I wish that I could say that I am now a full time blogger/uber-affiliate, but I can't. I do start a new job Monday, perhaps now I can afford to pay ALL of the bills at one time.

My last paycheck will be coming in next Friday. Of course, I had some trouble getting my check yesterday, because the supervisor that I answer to either doesn't understand how the pay periods work, doesn't understand the laws behind holding a paycheck, or doesn't care.

My guess is all of the above.

See, they told me that I could not have my check until I completed an 'exit interview'. That's all well and good...had that been my last paycheck. However, since it was not, they had no legal right to tell me I could not have it...which they were telling me consistently. It went as far as the boss in question telling another employee "do the interview NOW and send him home...".

It's sad to see a small business being consistently held back by 'supervisors' who don't understand an employee's legal rights. Furthermore, it sucks to have a boss that doesn't give half a crap about the people he is overseeing.

Either way, I don't have to put up with it anymore, and I am happy to say that I received my check after all.

Please, if you are a working citizen, learn the rules (at least the basics) of being an employee, your rights and privileges that are protected under law, etc. ESPECIALLY if you are young (for example, fast food workers). You may only care about getting a check, but to be certain you don't get screwed over, you need to know what legal rights you have. If an employer tries to force you to do something that you are legally prevented from doing, make sure your employer knows that YOU know this. An employer cannot fire you for sticking to workplace laws. Not legally, anyway. Sure, it annoys them. It always annoys the 'authorities' when you prove you know more about the system then they do...but I don't recommend rubbing it in their faces for the sake of showing off. Only do this if the situation calls for it...and make SURE you are correct before going through with it.

It's risky to make sure your employer plays by the rules. But everybody is held to the same rules, so it's best to know what those rules are.

When you know how the system works, you can make it work in your favor.

Whoops! Ads4Dough Bungles Payments!

I just received this email, and felt that I should pass this along. I actually found it amusing, considering that I have an account with Ads4Dough, but have not used them yet. Also, when a company makes a mistake like this, it's somewhat comical. Unless you are one of the poor saps with the unsigned checks...

We have mailed out the checks for the month of March.  As this was a record month on the amoutn of affiliates we paid out, we tried to rush the checks and get them out to everyone in a timely matter, but have realized there were a few checks that went out unsigned.  If your check is one of those.  Please mail them back to us at the address below and we will sign them and get them back to you asap.  I am very sorry for this inconvenience and we truely apologize if you were one of those affiliates who received an unsigned check.

The Importance of Good Employee Relations

Low morale in the workplace can have a serious negative effect on the quality of work that your company puts out. Nothing can hurt your business quite like a group of disgruntled workers looking for ways to 'get you back' for some perceived wrong. There are several things one can do (or avoid doing) that can help you get along better with your employees, thereby making them more likely to enjoy being in your employ.

1.Be Hands On – Nobody likes having orders barked at them from some goon perched up on a catwalk. Many employees see this as a person who is on a 'power trip', not understanding the job that the subservient folks must carry out. When the employees see a supervisor willing to get his hands dirty and work alongside the employees, even if only for a short time once in a while, the employees will respect his/her ability to empathize with the workers that are the bread and butter of the company.

2.Be Friendly – When a supervisor visits with his employees during the work day, there is a sense of comeraderie built within the business. Taking a few minues to ask a worker how their day is going is a great way not only to build a rapport, but also to give the employee an opportunity to ask questions or bring up things that need to be brought to someone's attention. Naturally, if an employee feels comfortable with their supervisor, they are more likely to share information that may be left undisclosed, such as dangerous work conditions, etc.

3.Don't Be Too Friendly – While it is good to be friendly with your employees, showing too much of a buddy-buddy relationship can lead to accusations of Nepotism, whether or not it exists in reality. People have a tendency to become jealous when they see someone get a promotion, pay raise, etc. when they feel that they are just as deserving, but feel it is being given based on friendship.

4.Don't Treat People Like Idiots – Even if your employees are total morons, you need to allow them to keep their dignity in front of their co-workers. Embarrassing them by degrading them in front of customers, co-workers, etc. is a bad thing, and only creates resentment toward you and your company. Also, keep in mind that this is the age of the blogger, and a bad company image on a blog with even a few hundred subscribers can unleash havoc on your reputation. Don't assume that people are too stupid to be effective, and even if they are, show them respect.

5.Be Willing to Take Blame – Not everything that goes wrong in the workplace is an employee's fault. Sometimes (if not most), the blame must be directed towards the top. If you make a mistake as a supervisor, admit it and rectify the situation to the best of your ability. Don't blame the employees if it's not ultimately their fault. An employee that sees you admit your imperfections as a supervisor will respect you for being able to stand up and take the heat.
