What is Affiliate Marketing?

Welcome back! Have you joined my mailing list yet?

Those of you who try to make money online have either heard about or have been involved in affiliate marketing. But there are a bunch of n00bs out there still scratching their heads trying to figure out how the big guns like John Chow make so much freaking money on the net who haven't realized that there's more to it than just making a very awesome blog. The real money is usually made on the back end, and most of the time it involves affiliate marketing.

Still wondering about affiliate marketing? Really? OK, here's a little visual for you:

Affiliate Marketing Explained

So really, once you get past the big, scary words, affiliate marketing is simply advertising where you earn a cut for your referrals. Now, there are a couple of different ways to go about this. Let's take a look at a couple of these methods.

Web Affiliate Marketing - This is probably the most prevalent type of affiliate marketing among my readers (and fans of the other guys). While this is a fairly broad term, it essentially means using the web as a tool to promote someone's product. For example, selling ad space on your blog or website, email marketing (which, although it is done on the web, I don't personally see it as the same thing as 'web marketing'), or using social media as a method for promotion. Most of these ads will come from an advertising network, like Logical Media or Market Leverage.

Offline Affiliate Marketing - This is basically the same principle applied to the analog world. One example is if you were to find a person you knew who provided some kind of service, for instance tax preparation, to partner up with. You would promote their service (using word of mouth, fliers, some method of advertising) and in return earn a commission based on your referrals. While it may not be quite as easy as sitting at a computer pasting ad code onto a site, the rewards can be just as great (if not faster, since you wouldn't have to wait to hit a certain payout threshold).

These two examples are just a basic look at two different realms that affiliate marketing works in. There's still a lot of good information out there, and I would recommend doing a bit of research. Once you figure out what affiliate marketing is, then it's only a simple matter of application.

  1. Affiliate Marketing can be so many things, but the basic concept is pure and simple. If you do not know how to design websites or create products, internet affiliate marketing is the way to go. You are assigned a link to your very own identifiable site, where if a customer makes a purchase, you get a fair commission of the sale; usually 50% or more, depending on the terms of the affiliate agreement. Most systems are set up to send payment to your paypal account, which automatically sends out your commission securely. Unless the owner of the affiliate program works for the CIA, it is very unlikely he has the technical skill to steal your commissions. But never say never, you should be selective about what you join. Some people ARE that smart and have no misgivings about stealing your time & money. Whereas some other programs aren’t even worth joining. Lot’s of fluff, no bang. Of course some people will buy ANYTHING, but the product you sell should be worth the money people spend on it. Why? Because repeat customers can often make up over 40% of the commissions earned by an affiliate. It’s so very important to make a good impression and to have a good product, that you know YOU can trust. That way you’ll stick with it when you get to that place where the rubber meets the road.

  2. I saw something about this on TV last night

  3. Very nice article.. Thanks for sharing..

  4. Thanks for a very informative article. I heard of AdSense but never quite knew how to incorporate it into what I am doing. Especially as my site does not generate thousands of visitors a day (not yet anyway!). I am taking your comments on board and will work on expanding to multiple sites and building up revenue with AdSense. Thanks again!

  5. An affiliate marketing business can be a lucrative business if you have a site that contains the right information and can make business connections with the right merchants, the right content on your website is what will attract traffic.
