Welcome back! Have you joined my mailing list yet?

Well, here’s something new that I want to try. While looking through my stats, I figured out which of my posts managed to get the most unique views for January. Here they are. Enjoy. Yeah.

  1. 2008 Income Report
  2. Feedbucket: Hope This Works Edition
  3. Plans for the New Year
  4. How I Got 100 Twitter Followers in Two Hours
  5. Take Your Networking Offline

I left out a couple which were my ‘Happy New Year’ one-liner and a sponsored one that I put up. I figured that those did not really count as ‘articles’ or whatever, so they were omitted. Anyway, these are the top 5 posts for January.

Which did you prefer?

I didn’t know until Sunday night that FeedBurner had been purchased by Google. Go figure. That meant that I had to move all of my RSS feeds over to my Google account. How fun.

Fortunately, the whole thing was automated and very easy.

I just hope that they continue to work. Which reminds me, have you moved your feeds over yet? Also, could you please grab my RSS feed and tell me if it is working?

I hope I can get that RSS feed subscriber count up.

Just a little while ago, I was playing around with my Twitter profile and I was trying to figure out a way to boost the number of Twitter followers that I had.

I had been lingering in the 400-user range for a while, and it was time to change that.

So, I managed to get over 100 new followers in less than two hours. Would you like to know how I did this? I bet you would…

It was very easy. You see, Twitter makes it painfully easy to follow tons of people. So what I did was pull up the list of people being followed by @JohnChow and just followed them. ALL of them.

Each page has 20 users, and it only takes a couple of seconds to click ‘follow’ on them all. For some reason, Twitter users are very quick to follow people.

One thing about this technique: you may want to keep the people who’s follows you hijack in your own niche. That way, you may get relevant tweets, rather than the random strange crap that you may expect from someone like me.

Anyway, the more people you follow, the more will follow you back. After a while, you can use Twitter Karma or whatever to go back and unfollow those who are not following you.

Have fun! And go follow me on Twitter!

For a while now, my main goal has not been to get us out of debt exactly. It’s true, we have a little bit (from a long time ago, eating away our credit rating). However, what bothers me the most isn’t that we only owe a couple thousand bucks total, but the fact that no matter how much money I bring home every week, it just isn’t enough to have any left over.

Yeah, right. Something doesn’t sit well with me at all about that. For starters, I’m not the one who really takes care of what gets purchased. Oddly enough, neither is my wife. Unfortunately, there’s not a whole lot that I can do to fix it right now (mostly because nobody will get on board with me for the sake of their sanity).

So here’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to eliminate the car note.

No, I’m not paying it off. I’m letting the car company take it back.

Wait, before you tell me that a repo is a horrible thing to have on your credit report, let me emphasize that I totally agree with you. It is a bad thing.

Unless it’s not on your credit.

See, this car that I’m paying for was purchased by my father-in-law. The car is only in his name, not even his wife’s name. Go figure. Well, he passed away about a year and a half ago. The car was passed to me and my family along with an almost $400 per month note (probably more, when you factor in all of the late fees and charges for paying at an authorized agent – $10 per month!!!).

So basically, I’m paying for something that I didn’t want in the first place (because I said I couldn’t afford it), took anyway (to help out the mother-in-law, as well as my family), and just as predicted, I couldn’t afford.

So they can have it back. That’s more money in my pocket. Fortunately, it’s income tax season. I should be getting a decent chunk back, and I’ll just buy the best used car or truck that I can find. Heck, it’s not like I go anywhere except for work anyway.

I probably should put some of that $400 in a savings account. Oh wait, I don’t have control of my cashflow (except the tiny bits I earn online, which help get me through the week on the road).

2009 will be the year that I begin to take back control of my financial life. I will be keeping track of this on this site. Isn’t it great when blogs evolve? Plus, you will get to know me a bit better, and maybe get some of my tips. I also hope you share your advice with me as well. I need all the help I can get.

This will be like trying to stop an advancing tank with a water pistol. What fun.

Before you start screaming about how technically bad that idea sounds, just take a deep breath and let me do some ’splaining.

I’m not suggesting that you should actually get off the internet. That woud be treason in my book. Yes, you can keep all of your Cat5 connected. I promise this isn’t scary. I’m talking about networking with other people. You know, like getting new potential clients lined up? Yeah, I thought you’d like that.

For a year now, I’ve been trying to make money online, and so far it’s been a good thing. But I seem to have a bit of trouble when it comes to building a mailing list, or generating leads, or even getting people to check out what I’m discussing on this site.

Most of the time, I’ll be talking to some stranger, and we wander on to the subject of the internet, and I’ll tell them about my websites. The trick is to get them to remember the friggin’ URL. So far, I have wished hundreds of times that I had some business cards with my site address and the services I provide on there, so they will have something tangible to help them remember what I was telling them about.

One of these days, I’ll actually get some business cards. In fact, I’d love to do that now, but I’m broke. And lazy.

Using business cards to promote your website is great. For me, I think I’d focus more on having them on hand to give people you are talking with when they ask what you do online, rather than just leave them around town. That technique works better if you pour concrete or sell firewood rather than for freelance writers or eBay listers…although in some smaller towns eBay listers can do quite well by leaving business cards at a local convenience store.

So the first thing you need to do is get a stack of business cards. They aren’t very expensive (unless you are broke, like I am). Or heck, save money and win them in a contest!

Oh look, how utterly convenient. I have a contest link right here…

BlogOhBlog (who has some awesome content, by the way) is having a contest where you (along with three other lucky devils) can win 1,000 business cards. Just click here for details.

Yeah, I’m getting in this one. Hey, like I said, I’m broke, and I could really use some offline marketing tools…join the club!
