Same thing for this site...we need some guest posters, as I stay pretty busy with my job (which has absolutely NOTHING to do with computers, much like many of my co-workers).

Send me your stuff!

How Do ‘Pay to Click’ Sites Work?

UPDATE: If you are reading this, please know that the owner of Pay2Surf never paid out. So much for a reputable PTC site.

Anyone who has done any kind of digging around the net looking for ways to make money online has stumbled on the plethora of 'Pay to Click' sites. The premise sounds good: click an ad/view a page, get paid. But are they an effective way to make money?

For me, the extensive list of these sites sends up a red flag. Why? Honestly, most of them look spammy, cheesy, or just plain stupid. And besides, who in their right mind would pay you to click a link? Well, lets take a look at how they work...

For this article, we will be looking at one site in particular - Pay2Surf.net (one that I know for a fact is legit).

How to Pay to Click Sites Make Money
First, in order to get paid it's necessary that a site is able to generate money. Pay2Surf makes money by selling both advertisements (banners, text) and allowing site owners to pay for traffic. Essentially, the site owner pays for x amount of unique visits, and the site is placed in the 'view ads' section for people to click on until the amount of paid visits is reached.

Another way that Pay2Surf makes money is by selling referrals. How does that work? Basically, when you sign up for an account (without using a referral link) you are nobody's referral. Users of the site can 'purchase' these unreferred users, and they are placed under the user as their own referral. Make sense? No? I know, it sounds a bit confusing, but if you start using their service you will learn quickly.

How Do I Make Money With Pay to Click Sites?
Now that we've covered how Pay2Surf gets their part of the cash, lets look at how YOU make money (because that's why you are here, right?) with these sites.

Basically, you sign up, view the ads for 15-30 seconds, and the money is credited to your account. Yes, that's it. Yes, it's worth it for Pay2Surf AND the advertiser. Why? Because traffic = potential customers/RSS subscribers/ad clickers.

But if you want to make more money from the system (instead of relying on the 10 or so ads per day you are viewing), you need to get referrals. There are two ways to do this: 1) tell friends, blog readers, etc. about the service and give them your affiliate link to sign up with or 2) purchase referrals from Pay2Surf directly. Now it's beginning to make sense, eh?

Conclusion
You CAN make money with these 'pay to click' sites, but you have to be smart about it. Don't set your expectations too high. If you think you will be able to quit your job within a couple of months, you are mistaken. In fact, I doubt that anyone has ever made this kind of money off of these sites (except maybe the site owners). And for crying out loud, go with a reputable site, like Pay2Surf.

Entrecard Quick Drop: Shut Down or Be Removed

From an email from Entrecard:

Greetings,

This message is to inform you that effective July 1, 2008, Entrecard will be purging from its system the accounts of all members currently operating "Quick Drop Pages". We have assembled a massive list of all quick drop pages, and starting on the above mentioned date, we are going to go through the entire list and close the accounts of all the owners.

To avoid having your account with Entrecard permanently removed, you must take down your quick drop page before July 1. If we open a quick drop page with your widget on it, your account will be removed from Entrecard without warning.

What is a Quick Drop Page?
Here is an example:

http://entrecard.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/screenhunter_02-jun-26-1736.gif

Quick drop pages are single pages with your Entrecard widget, made to load quickly and display your widget and not much else. Many quick drop pages have just a widget, and maybe an ad or some other type of widget. If you have a quick drop page, you must take it down immediately.

Why are Quick Drop Pages bad?
Quick drop pages devalue our network as a whole, by motivating members to drop on the same, quick loading pages, en masse to gain credits quickly and efficiently. Their traffic is going to these quick drop pages instead of being dispersed among quality blogs. It goes against the spirit of Entrecard, and is essentially a scheme to gain credits quickly.

How will you find them?
Luckily for us, people running "quick drop", or "powerdrop" pages have listed themselves all over the internet, and we've amassed a list that we believe includes every power drop page in existence. Additionally, members dropping on "quick drop pages" may start receiving stiff credit penalties for every drop they do on quick drop pages, as it is not a visit to a blog and thus an illegal drop.

For more info see our blog:

http://entrecard.com/blog/?p=399

I have removed my Entrecard quick-drop page from this site. Since a decent chunk of my traffic comes from Entrecard, I value having an account with them.

I can't really understand how it affects the value of their network, but I can see how it really defeats the purpose of EARNING your Entrecard credits by dropping on other blogs.

I would like to see them go back to the old method of pricing advertisements. Ah well, it's their network. Whatever they want to do...

Site News: That Annoying URL, Plugins, and More

It's almost time for me to crash. I work nights, and it's just after 9 AM. It's bed time.

I have spent a little time this morning updating some of my plugins, changed the subtext of the header (which I'm sure you can see...and it's quite revealing about my taste in movies/humor), and even spoke with the support team over at Hostgator, who are awesomely helpful with any of my quite retarded questions.

Also, June is coming to an end rather quickly, so that means it's time to get my quarterly earnings report ready. Did I finally catch up to the super-affiliate status of Chow? Did I meet my $500 annual goal? Do you really want to know? Sure you do...you want to know how good (or bad) I'm doing with my blogging-for-money-rule-breaking style...

Stay tuned!
